So, I’ve sat here the past couple of days attempting to write about the recent loss of my Uncle Al, an amazing man. I’ve recounted memories of  waking up to Dunkin Donuts on a Saturday morning, knowing Uncle Al had been by the house (and was golfing with my dad and oldest brother) and the smell of his pipe. His infectious smile and unadulterated honesty. His east coast accent and his hats. How he added an “e” to everyones name but called me sweetie (or when i was younger meme). He didn’t miss a birthday and he would always give you a smile. He was my fathers hero and best friend and my awesome uncle. I loved my Uncle Al dearly and feel so blessed to have made a trip to Arizona just a few weeks ago and had the chance to see him at a birthday gathering. You may know I have three older brothers. My oldest brother J.R wrote a letter to my uncle that expresses our love and gratitude for him perfectly. Here. We love you Uncle Al!

This morning I heard my phone ring and missed it by a moment. The second I looked at who was calling I knew what it was about and immediately broke down as I listened to the short broken up voice mail left by my brother Chuck saying to call Mom.  Now today I sit here at home scribbling thoughts and memories of my Grandpa (papa, sam) and sifting through boxes of photographs of the only Grandpa I knew, an undoubtedly amazing man. Although I am an extremely sentimental and sensitive person I am not the greatest with words and I am not great at writing or talking about my emotions. My heart is tugging in many different ways as I remember my grandpa and his struggle with Alzheimer’s and his life before the disease.

Many of my memories are from a short time period where I lived with my grandparents. My family was making the transition back to Arizona from California and I was starting 10th grade, right before I had my drivers license. During this time my grandfather would drive me to school on the days my parents weren’t in town. These days I always thought to myself “go faster grandpa!! I am going to be late”. (If you know me, you know I hate being late.) Inevitably, I was late, either due to my teenagerness or his slow driving.

One day we were going down the road on our way to school and I finally said (half joking) “Step on it Gramps!!!” he just looked over and laughed and laughed and gave me a nudge on the shoulder and said “OK!”  All while still going 20mph. I love my grandpa. He has taught me many things. One of which was to slow down. Slow down and listen to people, listen to their stories, laugh at their jokes, and enjoy their company. Smile at life.

Him and my grandma taught me the beauty of waking up in the early morning to go for a walk (and they were still kind enough to let me collapse back asleep afterward) and enjoying the cool air and new day.

He taught me to always make time for family. I can never remember an instance where my grandpa turned me down for a game of blackjack, Uno, or Go Fish, a ride on his tractor, or a dollar.

Now, If you talk about my grandpa a dollar is bound to come up. A dollar and the sound of the ice cream man. I spent a lot of time with my grandparents growing up. Many nights staying over at their house in Tempe and nearly every Sunday after church going over for some of Grandmas delicious home cooking. Aside from all the games, trips to Macfrugals, and coffee with tons of sugar and cream the thing that always sticks out the most…is that dollar. That dollar that could buy me Ice cream cones, popscicles, and knick knacks from the ice cream man. That dollar that lit us up every time. I remember buying candy, ice cream, even fake fingernails and Army men! I honestly do not remember a time where Grandpa didn’t have that dollar to give and give happily. Just a little thing that meant so much to me and my brothers.

I could literally talk all day about funny memories I’ve had with my Grandpa, the trip around the Midwest we took just a few years ago that I will always cherish and his never judgmental face. I will always think of these things and smile.

So here is to my Grandpa, Papa, Sam. Thank you for all of your laughs, toe popping, dollars, slow driving, and “terrible” days. I will miss our inside jokes and pats on the back. I am happy to know you are dancing in heaven, clear minded and joyful. I wonder if you will still have that farmers tan and round belly when I see you next? You’re probably telling everyone stories and laughing at their jokes. You’re the best Grandpa a girl could ever ask for.

And because photos and memories are what we have left, a photo that I think perfectly describes my grandpa. From his granddaughter who “sure likes taking pictures”

I love getting to travel for engagement sessions and weddings! I often head out to Arizona to shoot weddings since that is where I grew up so I always jump at the chance to hit the road and shoot in my hometown. It is always fun since when I go there I am often meeting couples for the first time, kind of like a photo session blind date. This time I actually had the chance to meet with Justin and Jamie a few weeks before we did their session and get to know their personalities before shooting. They are both slightly quiet but totally sweet and I think I was able to get them out of their shells a little bit for their Downtown Phoenix engagement session. I can’t wait for their Scottsdale wedding next November!

Laura and Miguel are Soul Mates. Their sweetness astounds and the story on how they met and formed a relationship just proves that they are meant to be, without a doubt.

Laura and Miguel met through a mutual friend in 2002. Not too long after they met Miguel was deployed to Saudi Arabia. A year later they crossed paths again and attempted to get together on multiple occasions, each time something got in the way and they had to cancel their various plans. Soon after Miguel was again deployed. While Miguel was away in Pakistan they kept in touch through sweet letters Laura would send. As chance would have it when Miguel got back into the states he moved just down the street from Laura, fate? I think so.  Their friendship grew as they became best friends, all the while they were slowly falling in love with one another. Finally they realized their friendship was meant to be much more and now, they are husband and wife.

Their wedding was at a lovely park in Fillmore in an outdoor amphitheater and their reception at a wonderful old inn in Santa Paula, The Glenn Tavern Inn. The spirit of the affair was laid back and joyous, exactly like Laura and Miguel themselves. A great couple, great friends, and some great cheesecake to boot! Oh yeah, and I totally got a name card and table at their wedding, it was just the sweetest thing! Another example of how thoughtful they both are.

I can’t wait to continue to see their family grow and keep getting to know them better :)

A few months back I posted a little guide for my brides (and brides everywhere) on some ideas on what to wear for your engagement session (or portrait session). I got some great feedback and have always had fabulously dressed couples ever since (although that could be just because my couples are fabulous all on their own). I wanted to post that again on the new blog with a few updates! As always, rules our meant to be broken and if you are on the fence about an outfit please feel free to ask me beforehand or bring it along to the session for some advice!

(I always send my new brides over this way before their engagement session to check out the article, so hello there bride of mine! )

So the big question: “What should I / we wear for our photography session?”

Things to Keep in Mind

Your body type. We all hate those glamour magazines* that tell us all of the ways that we are making ourselves look horrible in the clothes we love. I personally have a love hate relationship with a particular little black dress of mine. But, for certain occasions, it is worth doing a little research. For women and men both, there is no shortage of information about general body shapes and clothes that will be the most flattering for those body shapes. Put in the effort, and dress accordingly. (Example: almost no one looks good in a tube top and super short shorts, trust me)

– Coordinate colors. A great example is shown here with Amanda’s beautiful blue dress and Phil’s sweet vest to match. They look great together without looking too “matchy”. One thing to remember is they don’t have to be the exact same color. The same color family would work well too (example: bold purple and light purple). amandphil-2-1

– Coordinate styles. Guys make sure you match the overall “feel” of your girl’s outfit. If she’s wearing a dress, make yourself look a little nicer. If she’s rockin’ some jeans and fashion boots then funk yourself up a little with a snazzy tie and nice leather shoes.

– Play with patterns. But don’t get too crazy, unless that’s you..then go for it! Deeper colors are the most flattering. (for a great example of how heavily patterned clothes can also look super rad check out the photo from Matt + Jana’s Engagement session at the bottom of this post) Mix it up a bit and have some fun.

– A cute cocktail dress is always a good way to go.

– Stick to more fitted clothing. Anything hanging off your body (baggy) will make you look bigger than you are and look messy.

The layered look is always a winner for downtown settings. For example:
Guys: Nice dark jeans, hip shoes, collared shirt and a loose tie. A jacket to finish it off.
Girls: Nice jeans, paired with a dressy top, splashes of color or patterns, funky jewelry and high heels. (or cute dress).

– Spice up your outfit with a cute pair of heels or a funky necklace (or cute purse!).
(note: if you’re going to be wearing high heels, also bring some more comfortable flip-flops or slip-ons with you for walking).

– Talk with your photographer about the locations you will be shooting at so she can give specific recommendations.

Variety is the spice of life! It is always best to bring a few different outfits so that you can change for your specific location. My couples typically bring 2-3 outfits depending on the locations and how much time we have. They almost always end up doing at least 1 wardrobe change.

– Most importantly: Be comfortable and have fun with it! You will have a much better time which will make for better photos.

Things Not to Wear

– Bright white matching shirts.
– Horizontal stripes (or any thick stripes).
– Tops with big logos or a lot of writing on them – keep it clean and classy.
– Shirts with short hemlines and mid-drifts.
– Super Short skirts.
– Exact matching outfits. Look coordinated, not matching. White shirts and jeans don’t have much personality and your engagement session is your time to let your personality shine.

Other Ideas

Another fun way to make your session unique and fun is to bring props. For example, some fun props are:
– Sunglasses
– A “Thank You” or “Save the Date” sign on a poster-board for personalized thank you and save the date cards. Remember: it’s always great to get your engagement photos out there for everyone to see!
– Instruments you play
– Skateboards
– Balloons (or one big balloon!)
– Hats
– Your favorite cool couch or chair (Yeah, I’ll tote around some furniture for your awesome session)
– Anything else that makes your relationship unique or that is special to you.

Also, are you having your makeup done for your wedding?  Then why wouldn’t you want to get it done for your engagement session? It is always great to have a professional when you can (that’s why you’ve hired me!) so in order to add that extra “oomf!” to your session get your hair and makeup did ladies! I am sure you are absolutely wonderful at doing it yourself on a day-to-day basis. But a professional will know what photographs best and how to make you look perfect-o for your rockin engagement session that you will be looking at for years to come. If you are worried about cost you can always arrange to have your makeup trial done on the same day of your engagement session, two birds one stone!

“Let Me Explain. No, There Is Too Much. Let Me Sum-Up…”

Finally, the most important thing to remember about preparing for an engagement session is that we are trying to photograph you, so be yourself! Dress nice, but don’t get so “dressed up” that you are uncomfortable. Interact with each other the way you normally would. Goof off, make faces, cuddle, laugh, play. In short, have fun and bring your ‘A’ game!

I will be honest, I have yet to be disappointed with my couples on their fashion sense, you all rock and there is a reason we work so well together! Here are just a few examples of some great outfits my couples have put together, ranging from casual to more dressy and a mix of both! You all get an A+ for style!

* Note = Make no mistake, I love fashion and glamour magazines in general, just not when they’re telling me I can’t wear my yoga pants to the grocery store with my hair in a bun.
